Various Locations around Moab, Utah

Every September, the award-winning Moab Music Festival brings world-class musicians to stunning red rock venues around Moab, Utah for a feast of chamber music, jazz, and traditional music concerts. We call it “music in concert with the landscape,” celebrating old and new chamber music, jazz with a Latin flavor, and traditional music from around the globe.

The Moab Music Festival was founded in 1992 by Michael Barrett and Leslie Tomkins, professional musicians based in New York with an abiding love for the red rock country of southeastern Utah. According to Michael, “Creating the Festival allows us to combine two of the major passions of our lives—our love of great music beautifully performed and the tremendous beauty of the Moab area.”

Since its inception, the Festival has remained true to their dream: to marry world class musical performances with the spectacular landscape of the Utah canyonlands region and to bring musical opportunities to the Moab community, particularly to its children. The Festival engages the Moab Community, its children and youth through the Education Outreach and Artist-in-Residence programs.

Sunday 2:00 PM (FREE)
LDS Tabernacle, Temple Square, 50 W. North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah

The organ staff and guest organists perform 30-minute recitals in the Tabernacle from 12:00 noon to 12:30 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday recitals will be performed from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle. The impressive pipe organ is a symbol of the importance Latter-day Saints place on worshipping God through music. The Tabernacle organ has an interesting history. President Brigham Young asked Joseph Harris Ridges, who was born and raised near an organ factory in England, to build the first Tabernacle organ. Suitable timber was located and brought by volunteers from the Parowan and Pine Valley mountains, 300 miles south of Salt Lake City. In the beginning, the organ was powered by hand-pumped bellows, later by water power, and today by electricity. With improved techniques in organ construction, the instrument has been renovated and enlarged several times. Now comprising 11,623 pipes, the organ has 206 sets of pipes (ranks) of voices, and the console has 5 manuals, or keyboards. The Tabernacle organ is considered to be one of the finest organs in the world.

The organ in the Conference Center was built in 2000-2003 by Schoenstein & Co. of San Francisco. This organ of the American Romantic style employs a symphonic tonal approach with the richness and warmth characteristic of English instruments. Although designed primarily to provide colorful and varied accompaniment, the organ also renders the solo repetoire beautifully. A five-manual console controls the 7,708 pipes of its 130 ranks, which are spread across seven divisions.

The Off Broadway Theatre, 272 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah

It doesn’t matter what you’ve read. This is the one and only home of Utah’s actual longest running and most successful improv comedy troupe. Others may make their claims to fame, but here are the facts. Laughing Stock plays every Friday and Saturday night at the Off Broadway Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City. And have done so for the nearly 15 years. Some of the faces have changed, but our primary goal has always remained the same… entertainment. Trying to help you forget the worries of your day with laughter. There is no place quite like OBT. And, there is no improv troupe quite like Laughing Stock.

The Canyons Resort (Wed) 1251 Kearns Blvd. (Fri) Park City, Utah

The popularity of the Park City Farmer’s Market at The Canyons Resort and the desire to have an “in-town” farmers’ market has given rise to this new addition each Friday through the summer and into October (the market ends when the growers say there is no more product). The new market will feature, but is not limited to many of the same vendors as the Wednesday market. The Friday version of the Park City Farmers’ Market will be held at The Yard on Kearns Blvd (the former Anderson Lumber location) in the outdoor lumber storage area.

We feature local musicians each Market Day and provide picnic tables, so we invite you to sit down with a plate of freshly prepared gourmet food and enjoy the musical offerings! You may even be able to watch some of our artisans hard at work creating their art.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (Days and Times Vary)
Southern State University, 351 West Center Street, Cedar City, Utah

The Utah Shakespearean Festival was founded in 1961 and presented its first season in 1962. It was started in response to two influences: summer tourists desiring more evening activities after visiting the area’s six national parks, and a young actor’s desire to produce great theatre. Festival Founder Fred C. Adams, having just come to Cedar City after trying out the New York theatre scene for a few years, was new to the College of Southern Utah (now Southern Utah University) in 1959. However, seeing 150,000 annual summer tourists to the area, he knew he had a great potential audience for a theatre festival. Excited by the idea, he packed up his notes and ideas and visited Ashland, Oregon, the site of the granddaddy of all Shakespeare festivals, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. While there, he closely observed operations and was befriended by Angus Bowmer, the OSF founder, whom Adams interviewed extensively. On the long ride back to Cedar City, the Utah Shakespearean Festival was born.
