Neglect

Utah Contemporary Theatre is the nation’s only all free professional theater company, relying on grants, donations, and creative fundraising to guarantee that theater is accessible to anyone and everyone.

Neglect

“Neglect” was given its first showing in Utah by UCT as a free reading during the Edward Lewis Black Theatre Festival in February of 2010. The success of this reading prompted Utah Contemporary Theatre to mount a full production with the same cast and director: Yolanda Wood as Rose and Carleton Bluford as Joseph, with Anne Stewart Mark directing. Synopsis as follows:

Rose Ann Hayes is an elderly African-American woman. Her once middle-class Chicago neighborhood has become rundown and overrun with street thugs. Living alone, she has become afraid to even leave her apartment long enough to retrieve her daily mail. Joseph is a young, unemployed, African-American man who lives in the same neighborhood. During the 1995 Chicago heat wave that left over 700 Chicago residents dead, the two are thrown together by circumstance and desperation. Through its depiction of two marginalized Black communities – the elderly and the unemployed young – Neglect acts as a powerful examination of fear, loneliness, and the desperation that comes of impossible circumstances.

Ya-Ya Sisterhood Party

Hosted by B98.7’s radio host Erin, the annual Ya-Ya Sisterhood party will feature palm readers, decorative hats, one-of-a-kind holiday items, tastings from Harvest Restaurant, and fabulous local vendors. Attendees are encouraged to don their most over-the-top finery and baubles. The fancy dresses, gaudy jewelry and feather boas should also be accompanied by extravagant headdresses – and no headdress is too grand or outrageous.

A GUIDE TO ATTENDING YOUR FIRST YA-YA SISTERHOOD PARTY

Put on the Ritz
Ruffles, bows, fancy dresses, and feather boas….nothing is too “over-the-top” for the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Party. Have a grand cocktail ring but no fancy parties to wear it to? Get a few more to keep it company and wear it. Frippery, regalia, finery, and baubles are all part of the evening’s magic.

Wear a Headdress
Wearing your own special headdress is the crowning touch, a way to transform the everyday you into an extraordinary Ya-Ya Sister. Making the headdress to express your true, beautiful inner self is all part of the fun. You don’t have to be artistic or even “crafty” to create the most stupendous, outrageous, and unique headdress in the world. Obtain a “base hat” from your closet, the attic, or a vintage shop. Use supplies at hand or visit a craft store.

Princesses and Her Majesties
It’s true that we can’t choose our own name at birth, but we can name ourselves as a member of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Come to the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Party with your new name and join us to be officially named in your Very Special Naming Ceremony. The goal is to honor each other, welcome your new name, and celebrate the glorious uniqueness of each one of you.

We all know you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear but don’t think that’s stopping this crew from Florida! You get a little bit of everything in our production of The Great American Trailer Park Musical.

Matinees on September 19 & 26

The Children’s Literature Association named this “the best American children’s book of the past two hundred years,” and Joseph Robinette, working with the advice of E.B. White, has created a play that captures this work in a thrilling theatrical presentation. All the enchanting characters are here: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and, most of all, the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the “miracle” of her web in which she writes, “Some pig.” It’s the beginning of a victorious campaign which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte. This is a beautiful, knowing play about friendship that will give you an evening of enchantment.
