Dethklok and Mastodon

Dethklok is both a fictional death metal band featured in the Adult Swim animated program Metalocalypse, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, and a virtual band created to perform the band’s music in live shows. The band is sometimes cited as an example of “comedy rock” on par with bands such as GWAR and Spinal Tap. The first Dethklok album was released on September 25, 2007, entitled The Dethalbum. The music heard on Metalocalypse is performed by Brendon Small, with others as needed. Small and drummer Gene Hoglan performed on the album. The album debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 list. According to the band’s official MySpace blog, as well as Brendon Small’s MySpace blog, Brendon has finished recording The Dethalbum II, to be released September 29th, and is busy establishing the live line-up for the next tour.

Music You Can See: Desolation Wilderness

Nicolaas Zwart began recording as Desolation Wilderness in 2005, mapping a course without compass or sextant. The tools are vibraphone, tape delay, glockenspiel, electric guitar. A synthesizer, too. Voice plays its role, though Desolation Wilderness speaks volumes through audio themes without words. The themes of Desolation Wilderness are rarified and also mundane, the usual in common with literature, art and the midway at Coney Island. If Lawrence Ferlinghetti went on a rabbit run to that midway with popgun in hand, Desolation Wilderness would be his ringtone.

Modest Mouse w/ The Night Marchers

Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band formed in 1993 in the Seattle suburb of Issaquah, Washington by singer/lyricist/guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy. Since their 1996 debut album, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, their lineup has centered around Brock, Green and Judy. Guitarist Johnny Marr (formerly of The Smiths) joined the band in May 2006, along with percussionist Joe Plummer (formerly of the Black Heart Procession) and multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso, to work on the album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. Guitarist Jim Fairchild joined the band in February of 2009.

The band has attained significant mainstream success since being signed to Sony’s Epic Records in 2001 and have been one of the leading bands in the commercialization of indie rock, beginning with The Moon & Antarctica and Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which have been certified gold and platinum by the RIAA respectively. They have gone on to sell over three million records since. Elements of Modest Mouse’s early sound have been likened to or inspired by that of Pixies and numerous other alternative rock and space rock bands. Their name is derived from a passage from the Virginia Woolf story “The Mark on the Wall” which reads, “I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises.”

Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead’s noisy, dissonant guitars, alternate tunings, and quiet, stilted lyrics have often been compared to early Sonic Youth. After randomly meeting at an Italian restaurant in New York, Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace formed the band in 1993. The name was taken from a song by the ’80s no wave band DNA. __by Tracy Frey

KARMA featuring KASKADE

KI Events & The Kollective present KARMA featuring KASKADE. Le Castle Vania & DJK open.

Karma is a SAMA award-winning (South African equivalent of the Grammy) singer-songwriter and the former lead singer of South Africa’s platinum selling band Henry Ate. She moved to the United States in 2003, bringing with her an undeniable talent, addictive songs and an uncanny ability to captivate every listener with mesmerizing performances.

Karma’s sound is reminiscent of Suzanne Vega and Natalie Merchant infused with the pop friendliness of The Cranberries, while her writing channels the likes of Dylan, Griffin and Mitchell offering an infusion of social satire, quick wit, heartfelt melancholy and in-your-face honesty – attributes which have earned her the title of 1 Wordsmith in her native South Africa and landed her a publishing deal with Urband & Lazar Music Publishing here in the US.

Karma Musical ArtistKarma has toured extensively over the past five years performing alongside The Gin Blossoms, Fiction Plane, G Love and Special Sauce and Iron & Wine to name a few. In 2008 Karma has performed over 160 shows, including: Karma’s landmark performance in The London Eye (Feb), her sold out Henry Ate Kick in the Shin Tour (Apr-May), her celebrated performance at London Pride to 45,000 people (Jul), two national US tours (Feb-Mar & Jun-Aug), headlining the Women’s Red Rock Festival (Aug) and her highly acclaimed performance at the star studded Phelophepa 7th Gala Dinner at the New York Times Center (Nov).

With two solo albums under her belt, “Don’t Walk Fly” engineered by Grammy Award-winner Scott Canto (Shakira, Jon Secada, Nine Inch Nails, Ricky Martin) and “papercuts” co-produced by Grammy Award-winner John D Thomas (Lauryn Hill, P.Diddy, Prince, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx) plus the hit single “I Feel Like I’m Dying” with Lil’ Wayne for which Karma’s song “Once” was sampled and is at the center of what has been called a landmark case in a copyright law in the US, Karma is well on her way to showing the rest of the world what South Africa already knows: Here is an amazingly prolific young songwriter who is teetering on the brink of worldwide recognition.
