The Capitol Theatre is one of Salt Lake County’s most beloved buildings. A landmark in downtown Salt Lake since 1913, a newspaper reporter at the time described the building as “rich and restful, without vulgar or gaudy display.” Vaudevillians, silent movies, and “talkies,” were the mainstay in the theatre for years.
Renovated and reopened in 1978 the Capitol Theatre is known today for its elegant turn-of-thecentury architecture and serves as the home for Ballet West, Utah Opera, Children’s Dance Theatre, and Broadway Across America -Utah.
The Capitol hosts a wide variety of events each season. Recent events include auditions for Fox Television’s So You Think You Can Dance; singers Sinead O’Conner and Jim Brickman; comedian Carlos Mencia; and the annual KUER Public Radio Silent Film night. Large scale productions at the Capitol include The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Miss Saigon.

John Butler’s Carmina Burana –our most requested ballet by Utah audiences – is a thrilling collaboration between dancers, singers, and orchestra, set to Carl Orff’s heart-pounding score. Carmina Burana is paired with George Balanchine’s complex and inventive The Four Temperaments. Together, these two mid-Twentieth Century masterpieces create a powerful and emotionally stirring evening.

David Sedaris, NPR Humorist and Best-selling Author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, is coming to the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City on Saturday, October 24, 2009 for one performance only!

Children across Utah are invited to audition for the Ballet West Academy’s Fall Semester. Ages 8 to 10 audition at 4 p.m.; ages 11 to 13 audition at 5 p.m.; ages 14+ audition at 6 p.m. No audition necessary for children ages 2 to 7.
Young Frankenstein, the stage reincarnation of the classic Mel Brooks movie, is alive & headed to Salt Lake City. As part of the 2010-2011 Broadway Across America – Utah season, Young Frankenstein will be at Capitol Theatre April 26 – May 1, 2011.
This wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankensteing legend follows bright, young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to create a monster – but not without scary and hilarious complications.
The brains behind the laughter is mad genius and three time Tony® winner Mel Brooks himself – who wrote the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book – along with his record-breaking team from The Producers: five-time Tony®-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman and three-time Tony®-winning writer, Thomas Meehan.
