Afro-Brazilian Dance Circle “Roda”

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art which includes elements of physical and mental strength, beauty, and power. M. Jamaika often refers to capoeira as a “complete martial art” in that it encompasses a vast spectrum of movement and culture; it incorporates kicks, ground movements, self-defense, acrobatics, music, and tradition.

These movements are driven by the rhythms emanating from the roda’s instruments and vocal song. Capoeira was created by African slaves in Brazil over 500 years ago, and through Mestre Bimba and others, has since become a recognized art form. Capoeira can be done by anyone of any age or size and its benefits are evident in all who take it on. It is a beautiful expression.

Classes focus on all aspects of Capoeira: strength, flexibility, movement, endurance, coordination, interaction, rhythmic skills, vocal and instrumental skills, cultural awareness, performance, and community.

Our Winter Batizado will be Saturday January 15 at the Northwest Community Center.

Thursday January 13 (at the studio)
5:00-6:00 pm: kids capoeira workshop
6:00-7:00 pm: beginner/intermediate teen/adult capoeira workshop
7:00-8:00 pm: Brazilian dance workshop
8:00-9:00 pm: advanced teen/adult capoeira workshop
9:00 pm: roda

Friday January 14 (at Northwest Community Center: 1300 W 300 N SLC)
5:00-6:15 pm: kids capoeira workshop
6:30-9:00 pm: teen/adult capoeira workshop & roda

Saturday January 15
9:45 am: breakfast potluck at studio
10:30-noon: Q&A panel with capoeira masters at studio

2:30 pm: students arrive at event at Northwest Community Center
3:00 pm: batizado event at Northwest Community Center (suggested $5 donation for spectators)
