Belly Dance for the Birds

Belly Dancing for the Birds, Wasatch Avian Education Society, Salt Lake City, Utah, Shahravar Belly DancingThe Wasatch Avian Education Society (W.A.E.S.) and Shahravar are pleased to announce Belly Dance for the Birds, a Middle Eastern dance showcase and fundraiser for avian education along the Wasatch Front on Saturday, April 30th from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the UOU Post Theater.

Enjoy some of Utah’s top professional belly dancers including Shahravar and her students including Susan Kelly, president of W.A.E.S. along with shimmering veils, singing cymbals, sharp swords and a fantastic variety of inspiring performances.

There will also be a silent auction for an assortment of gift baskets, gift certificates, and artwork by local artists.

Wasatch Avian Education Society is a registered nonprofit organization in the State of Utah, located in the Salt Lake City area. 2011 marks the 17th year of service to the community and the exotic birds that are so much a part of our lives. They are dedicated to the study and keeping of birds, with an emphasis on having parrots as pets. They also offer rescue and adoption services.

Shahravar will be celebrating her 20th year in Belly Dance! She began studying and performing Middle-Eastern Dance styles in 1991. Her dance background includes Egyptian Cabaret, Turkish, American Tribal, Saudi Folk, Khallegy, Tunisian, and Lebanese Debke line dances. She began teaching in 1993. She’s a founding and current member of Habibi Habibi, a professional Middle Eastern style dance troupe. Shahravar also created the Shah Sitara Collaborative in 2005. In 2009, she was awarded “Best Fusion Belly Dance” by City Weekly. She now teaches a variety of classes throughout the Salt Lake Valley and opened her Urban Gawazii Belly Dance studio in 2009.

Run For Kids

Run for Kids, Boys & Girls Club, Provo, Utah, 5K 10K running, Fundraiser, Charitable, Utah CountyThe annual Run for Kids is a 5k/10k run walk or stroll benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County’s Triple Play Health and Fitness Program will be held April 9, 2011.

The running route begins at the historic Fort Utah Park located at 200 N Geneva Rd. in Provo. From the park the route meanders along the peaceful Provo River.

Registration begins at 7:00am with the race beginning at 8:30am. There will be a light breakfast available before and after the race at Fort Utah Park. After the race, carnival games will be available for kids and kids at heart.

All race participants will receive a stylish shirt and the chance to win some prizes!

Wasatch Woman Love Your Body 6K/10K

The Love Your Body race was created five years ago by Wasatch Woman magazine for women who care about their health, fitness, community, friends, and families. By treating yourself well, you’re able to achieve your personal best and be an inspiration to others. Be part of the largest woman-only run in Utah. Over 2000 participants are expected to be in attendance at this event. Part of the proceeds will go to the new Thanksgiving Point children’s museum, The Museum of Natural Curiosity. We’ll also be making a donation to the Girl Scouts of Utah.

The 10k run and 6K (3.72 miles) run/walk, will include a portion of the beautiful Gardens at Thanksgiving Point. The course will be flat and fast and will be the perfect run to finish the season if you are looking to set a final personal record. You will establish healthy fitness habits going into fall and winter by training for this event and you’ll feel great for participating. We encourage you to bring your families along for support. There will be plenty for the kids and family to do at Electric Park where we will start and finish the race.

Firehouse BBQ Cook-Off

The Intermountain Barbecue Association , a Utah non-profit organization, will be hosting the first annualFirehouse BBQ Cook-Off in Holladay, UT on Fri/Sat, August 27-28, 2010. This event, featuring both professional and “backyard” (amateur) teams, will be held right behind the City Hall in Holladay (4580 S  2300 E). Both professional and “backyard” teams will compete for top honors & prizes, and proceeds from the event will go towards various participating Fire Houses in the Salt Lake valley. The event will be licensed by the Kansas City Barbecue Society – the largest BBQ association in the world.

Teams will begin setting up & cooking Friday evening. On Saturday, there will be BBQ and soft drinks available by vendors to the public. There will also be public demonstrations on Saturday, and the judging and award ceremony will take place Saturday afternoon around 4 PM.

Festival of Trees

Salt Lake City, UT – The Festival of Trees celebrates its 40th birthday this year – but there’s nothing “over-the-hill” about Utah’s favorite Holiday tradition. Primary Children's Medical Center Festival of Trees, Sandy, Utah Holiday, Christmas, LightsToday, as one of the world’s largest indoor displays of decorated Christmas Trees, the Festival embraces its Ruby Anniversary through the passion embodied by thousands of volunteers who organize and orchestrate the Festival in order to raise funds for children at Primary Children’s Medical Center.

The Festival of Trees ushers in the Holiday Season Wednesday, December 1 through Saturday, December 4, at the South Towne Expo Center.  Every penny raised benefits Primary Children’s Medical Center.

This year the Festival will feature more than 800 trees, each with its own unique style: ornate, trendy, whimsical, creative, humorous, and sentimental.  Every tree is decorated and donated by individuals, families, businesses, church groups, and community organizations.

Celebrate the Holiday Season and the love our community has for children by attending the Festival of Trees! The Festival runs Wednesday, December 1 through Saturday, December 4, at the South Towne Expo Center, 9575 South State Street in Sandy, Utah, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are: $5.00/adults; $4.00/seniors; and $3.00/children age 11 and under. Children younger than 2 years of age are free of charge. Discount tickets are available at Zions Bank locations for: $4.00/adults; $2.50/children. Wednesday, December 1, is “Family Day,” allowing six immediate family members to attend for $15.00.

This year’s event will be held in Murray Park at Pavilions 1, 2 and 3 on Saturday, September 12th 10am to 6pm! There will be an opening ceremony and a ritual in the afternoon that everyone can attend. Workshops will be conducted where you can learn and explore different walks of pagan life. Throughout the day you can explore booths with information about pagan groups and activities. You can listen to some great pagan music. You can sit in the the shade and let your imagination sweep you away during one of our Mother Goose circles, where you’ll hear fairy tales and stories brought to life.
