Gwar is a shock rock band formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984. The band is best known for its elaborate sci-fi/horror film inspired costumes, raunchy obscene lyrics, and graphic stage performances which consist of humorous re-enactments of politically and morally taboo themes. Dethklok is both a fictional death metal band featured in the Adult Swim animated program Metalocalypse, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, and a virtual band created to perform the band’s music in live shows. The band is sometimes cited as an example of “comedy rock” on par with bands such as GWAR and Spinal Tap. The first Dethklok album was released on September 25, 2007, entitled The Dethalbum. The music heard on Metalocalypse is performed by Brendon Small, with others as needed. Small and drummer Gene Hoglan performed on the album. The album debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 list.

The band has released three albums on Atlantic Records. They have released popular singles such as “45”, “Save Me”, “Devour”, “Sound of Madness”, and “Second Chance”. All of their ten singles released to date have climbed into the Top 5 of the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, making them the first band to accomplish the feat.
